Start with signs children actually need

The easiest signs are not always the shortest signs. The easiest signs are the ones a child can use right away. A sign like more is useful because it appears during snacks, bubbles, books, music, games, and play. A sign like help is powerful because it gives children a calmer way to ask for support.

Use the ASL Kids app or dictionary to see each sign in motion. ASL includes handshape, movement, facial expression, and context, so video practice is much better than memorizing a still picture alone.

First five

More, help, all done, stop, please

These signs work during meals, play, transitions, and classroom routines.

Daily routines

Eat, drink, bathroom, sleep, book

Routine signs are easy to repeat because children see the same moments every day.

Connection

Mom, dad, friend, play, I love you

Social signs help signing feel warm, not only functional.

How to practice without turning it into homework

  • Pick three to five signs for the week.
  • Model each sign during the real moment.
  • Say the word while signing unless a child’s support plan says otherwise.
  • Accept early approximations and respond to the message.
  • Use signs with songs, stories, games, meals, and daily routines.
